11/23/2020 Rebuilding Together Chattanooga Receives Wells Fargo Grant for St. Elmo Home Repair ProjectRead Now CHATTANOOGA, TENNESSEE (Nov. 23, 2020) -- Rebuilding Together, a leading national nonprofit organization that provides critical home repairs to homeowners in need at no cost to them, announced a collaboration with Wells Fargo. Through grants provided by Wells Fargo, Rebuilding Together affiliates were able to repair homes for people in need throughout the country.
Rebuilding Together Chattanooga received a $10,000 grant as a part of the Wells Fargo Builds℠ program. The grant from Wells Fargo helped Rebuilding Together Chattanooga renovate a bathroom, replace a roof, install decking, and paint at a home in the St. Elmo neighborhood. While contractors primarily were used for this project due to COVID-19, a small number of neighborhood volunteers adhering to COVID-19 precautions were able to help the family with yard clean-up as well. “The investment from Wells Fargo not only allowed us to provide this family with a safer and healthier home, it also helped to preserve an important legacy in the historic St. Elmo neighborhood," said Cal Boroughs, chair of Rebuilding Together Chattanooga. “From a historical perspective, thinking of the blood, sweat, and tears, daddy put into the house when he built it. Being able to hold on to his legacy and repair it to the point that it is really means a lot. Look, we are surrounded by all these big houses. When we were growing up, they weren't here. To live amongst these giant houses, recently remodeled, repainted houses, it restores my dad’s legacy, and it gives [my sister and nephew] a safe place to live. Rebuilding Together Chattanooga’s efforts helps take the sting out of gentrification," said Mr. K, the homeowner. “The investment from Wells Fargo not only allowed us to provide this family with a safer and healthier home, it also helped to preserve an important legacy in the historic St. Elmo neighborhood," said Cal Boroughs, chair of Rebuilding Together Chattanooga. About the Wells Fargo Builds℠ Program As part of the Wells Fargo Builds℠ program, Wells Fargo is investing more than $1.3 million in Rebuilding Together’s work, bringing tangible assistance and aid to homeowners in underserved communities throughout the country. Last year, Wells Fargo Foundation made a $1 billion commitment to address the U.S. housing affordability crisis through 2025. The Wells Fargo Foundation will support Rebuilding Together’s work to provide critical home repairs that increase the health and safety of community residents across the country. Those repairs include roof and water heater replacements, plumbing and electrical updates, the installation of grab bars, handrails and ramps among many other repairs that follow Rebuilding Together’s 25 Safe and Healthy Homes Priorities. CHATTANOOGA, TENNESSEE (April. 1, 2020)--Rebuilding Together, the leading national nonprofit organization with a mission to repair the homes of people in need and revitalize our communities, will host its annual National Rebuilding Month this April. Each year, Rebuilding Together affiliates repair 10,000 homes, making them safer for our most vulnerable neighbors including seniors, veterans, people with disabilities and families with young children. In our community, Rebuilding Together Chattanooga works throughout the year to reserve affordable homeownership and revitalize communities through free home repairs and modifications for neighbors in need. Throughout April, Rebuilding Together affiliates across the country celebrate our work to serve veterans, older adults, families with children and victims of disaster by providing them with a variety of critical, safe and healthy home repairs, including: flooring repairs and replacement, weatherization repairs, roof and handrail replacements, accessibility modifications, painting, landscaping and other major home rehabilitations. The repairs are provided free of charge to neighbors in need, who are often faced with diminishing resources and must choose food and medicine over critical home repairs. Over time, neglect of maintenance can lead to crumbling foundations, dangerously sagging roofs and windows and doors that can’t be securely shut. “We feel it is a fundamental right for everyone to have a safe home and community,” said Caroline Blakely, President and CEO of Rebuilding Together. “Every April, we have the chance to highlight the critical home repairs and community revitalization projects Rebuilding Together affiliates are doing year-round to make this vision a reality.” National Rebuilding Month is made possible by Republic Services who provides support to Rebuilding Together affiliates. National Rebuilding Month originated in 1973 in Midland, Texas with volunteers helping neighbors rebuild their homes. The group founded Rebuilding Together, at the time called “Christmas in April,” and gathered around a month of service each year in April. The mission then grew beyond the idea of providing service one month per year to bringing volunteers together to provide neighbors in need with critical repairs year-round. CHATTANOOGA, TENNESSEE (Nov. 24, 2019) -- Rebuilding Together Chattanooga funded its second neighbors-helping-neighbors project in the St. Elmo neighborhood on Nov. 24, 2019.
As many within the community came together to raise money for needed repairs to the Lombardo home after a storm caused damage in July 2019, Rebuilding Together Chattanooga donated $2,000 in materials from its Revitalizer level partner, Lowe’s Home Improvement, in order to cap off the needed project amount. "Thanks to recent generous donations by area churches, we got really near the goal," said Alison Van Winkle, the project's fundraising organizer. "Then, the family received a Lowe's grant for building materials thru Rebuilding Together of Chattanooga, founded in St Elmo. This took care of the remaining balance. Thank you to all who prayed, donated time and gave financial support." You can read more about the community giving project on its GoFundMe page at https://www.gofundme.com/f/save-the-lombardo-house.
